What 3rd period math does to a person (10/10 or 5/5)
Notes: All jokes aside, my mind is so fascinated by this film. It is the story of obsession and addiction told by Max who looks to solve the meaning of life through math and substance abuse. Every single square inch of this work is special as I haven’t seen anything like this at all.
Fav Part: For a minuscule budget, this movie destroys all thoughts on editing, cinematography, and sound design. The manic camera work perfectly describes the many trips Max experiences on his path toward enlightenment and acceptance. The sound design keeps you on your toes as you figure out what’s real and the sub hidden meaning behind it. And to top this all off we have a black and white grainy filter on the film to really encapsulate the religious undertones the film brings to thought.
Fav Sec Part: Sean Gullette has one of my favorite performances as our main character Max. The slow but meaningful descent that max goes through as his numerical problems take a hold of him is portrayed in such an artistic way that rivals Rami Malek in Mr Robot. I really loved the blissful ending that Max is enlightened upon as he realizes the power and greed the numbers he found brought.
Quick Cons: First time in a long time where I actually believe there are no cons. Yes you can say that the movie feels a lot longer than it’s 1:25 run time but when every scene is important and great, the longer feel is more of a blessing. If you really want to nit pick the cheaper budget can be a problem at times but with what the film accomplished, those thought disappear quickly.
Notes 2: There’s not much to say really as this is an underrated gem that many film nerds like myself would adore.
