jack lemmon has a constant sense of sorrow in his eyes, something that works so well in such a bleak film. his expressions alone can have such a powerful effect, and on top of it his performance is incredibly poignant. so much rage and so much misery, and it is all too real and greatly touching. i say "so" a lot but it's deserved, jack was such a brilliant actor who is perfect for dramatic roles like this, and yet some people still have the nerve to address him as solely a comedian. i'm not saying he can't be hilarious too, my favourite film is a comedy he stars in, but this movie is so empty and hopeless and his part in it is sublime. sissy spacek was wonderful too. an absolutely harrowing, yet absolutely phenomenal film. i think i should watch something happier next
