Battle Royale
Of course „Battle Royale“ is as what it so obviously portrays and sells itself to be: an obscenely -sometimes comically- violent, entertaining but at the same time disturbing and dystopian, tightly paced thriller; with barely any breathing room in between and of course the iconic and eponymous premise.
But mixed in there are universally important themes about a societal, a generational, divide as well as surprisingly many emotional (borderline melodramatic) moments and a cast of incredibly interesting characters.
Said characters are definitely the heart of the movie and carry it beyond a normal and way to campy slasher movie. Even though the cast is pretty large it doesn’t feel like any characters are being neglected by the narrative, quite on the contrary almost all of them are pretty fleshed out through competent flashbacks and credible dynamics with their peers.
Accentuating this all is the loud and definitely central soundtrack, consisting of many pieces of classical music, that fully bring out the drama of each and every situation.
