Ran
Ran is the absolute pinnacle of visual cinematography. I genuinely don’t think there’s a better-looking film out there. Akira Kurosawa was born in the perfect era to create something this ambitious with the tools he had, and he pushed them to their absolute limit.
I know the story might not work for everyone, but for me, it was incredible. The exploration of power, betrayal, and family dynamics in feudal Japan is fascinating, and the way it unfolds feels both grand and deeply human at the same time. The sheer scale of this film is unreal, it honestly feels like someone went back in time with a camera and documented a massive war.
The battle scenes, with hundreds of soldiers and horses moving across vast landscapes, are something you can barely even imagine being pulled off, yet Kurosawa makes it feel completely real. Knowing he achieved so much of this practically, and while nearly blind, only deepens my respect for him as an artist.
This isn’t just a movie, it’s an experience. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
