MidsommarCaitlin A9.9· June 20, 2024Followhave many thoughts to process after seeing the directors cut for the first time in imax(thanks a24). the cinematography i loved the first time popped even more on the big screen. the distorted visuals while the characters are on shrooms is also even more cool at such a bigger size and are pretty accurate(also mark having a bad trip was rly funny).florence pugh gives such a raw emotional performance it pulls you into this world and her grief. her boyfriend is perfectly unlikable and scummy and it helps that he looks like chris pratt. mark is also so well written that he is the perfect duchy friend who spends the whole time hitting his vape and provides good comedic relief. josh’s character is also very well written as his passion for the subject clouds his mindset, causing him to overstep boundaries. i also think it provides as a good critique of academia and the way it interacts with the cultures it can be studying. the other couple provided as a perfect foil, always physically close and hugging , while dani and christian were often on opposite sides of the screen. the idea of physical touch, and the lack of it between dani and christian, can be seen through out the film. at one point pelle comments on how christian does not hold her and he is right. but the cult embraces her with open arms, literally and physically. when she’s crying they hold and touch her, while also feeling her pain with her. this is just one of the many subtle ways they begin indoctrinate her. the directors cut provided more scenes from the cult that goes even more depth in their lore and their manipulation of dani.one important scene in this cut is when dani is able to save a child from being sacrificed, the same day as the old people kill themselves. she was unable to save her parents and sister, something that haunts both the narrative and the visuals. but the cult gives her the chance to take control and save the life of a helpless child, the way dani viewed her sister.the score is almost nauseating as the uneasy and tense atmosphere is creates. the theme of white supremacy that is sprinkled throughout adds to the uncomfortable atmosphere. the costume and set design is spectacular as well and the flower dress is so iconic. this film is a visual feast and every shot captivates the eyes. ari aster is a genius and everyone should try to watch this cut if they can.CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the appSee all Caitlin's reviews for Midsommar (2)First watch9.9June 14, 2020Rewatch 19.9June 20, 2024
