Sinners
i'm struggling to completely form my words. sinners, and i mean this seriously, is going to be the film that cements ryan coogler as an auteur. something on that later. and maybe i am overexaggerating and maybe it is the theater effect. but i definitely think this movie might be one of the greatest films of the 2020s.
there's a lot to talk about in this film. i absolutely adored the way coogler adapts vampires. i loved the special effects, the sound design, the music, the inclusivity. that scene. if you know, you know. the costume design, the production. it really was an amazing film to watch.
i got plans to write a paper on the way coogler weaves together transnational histories to create a new form of transnational solidarity (yes i am a pretentious academic at heart). i'll probably write another review where i break things down more. but yeah. go see sinners! people keep wondering where the original films are and this is an original film!! so go see it!
i also got to see this film in new orleans' oldest running movie theater and in 70mm imax!! utterly gorgeous! and also i am certain there were people who worked on the film in the room with us, so that also made the experience special!!
