Loving Vincent
Loving Vincent is a mesmerising meditation on loss, memory, and the mystery of a life lived in colour and turmoil, not just a portrait of a man, but of the fragile beauty of a soul too often misunderstood. What begins as a simple quest to deliver a letter soon deepens into a tender unravelling of Vincent van Gogh’s final days, seen through the eyes of those he left behind. Inspired by more than 800 of his real letters, the film becomes less a search for answers than a journey through grief, art, and remembrance.
What makes it truly unique is its form: about 60.000 oil-painted frames, created by 125 artists and modelled after over 100 of van Gogh’s paintings. The result is the first fully painted feature film, and you feel that in every trembling brushstroke.
I didn’t expect to cry over moving paint on canvas. But I did. Loving Vincent is a true work of art, exactly what a film about Vincent should feel like: vivid, searching, and quietly devastating.
