Superman
“THEY CHOSE HIM, LET THEM DIE.”
This movie is a spectacle, and it lived up to everything I wanted it to.
It’s just such a fun film—you can’t help but have a great time the entire way through.> The soundtrack was ethereal, and the cinematography was solid for the most part. I personally don’t love James Gunn’s style of using so many close-ups, but there were about 10 shots in the movie that completely starstruck me.> The standout element of this movie was the acting. Every single person nailed their role. The biggest shock, though, was Nicholas Hoult—he stole the entire movie. He was easily the biggest star, and in my opinion, delivered the best villain performance since Heath Ledger’s Joker. Honestly, it was so beyond perfect, it was crazy.> Now, onto my issues with the movie: everything felt overly political. There were remarks referencing Israel and Palestine, mass deportations, and commentary on what an “alien” can contribute to a country and what they mean to society. You can very clearly see Gunn’s political views after watching this, and in my opinion, there’s no need for this level of politics in a film. That said, the person I saw it with disagreed with me here—so maybe it’s being perceived differently by everyone.> I also didn’t love the third act. Acts 1 and 2 were stellar, but Act 3 felt very lackluster.> Still, this movie lived up to my expectations perfectly, and I’m beyond excited for Gunn’s new universe. It’s safe to say—the Gunn didn’t jam.
