Fargo
This film shocked me. Sometimes when you go into a film with high expectations, there is a higher chance you’ll get let down. I went in to Fargo with some pretty high expectations, and I walked out more than pleased. From the second this film started, I knew I would love it. It creates such a chilling atmosphere, and it encapsulates so many different feelings in it’s said atmosphere. The warm feeling of eggs and bacon on a snowy winters morning, as well as the chilling feeling of bloodshed and death. The story is told from the perspective of 3 characters, pregnant police officer Marge Gunderson; greedy thug Carl Showalter, and car salesman Jerry Lundegaard. Each character plays an essential part in the story. Marge being the classic protagonist, and Carl being the greedy villain. But we see both of those things come out in Jerry. They humanize him enough to where we do feel for him throughout the movie, but he also has low morals similar to Carl. I’ve always enjoyed stories shown from multiple different perspectives, and this one did it so well that it’s hard to believe.
A lot of that is due to the fantastic writing. Ethan and Joel Coen never fail to amaze me with their writing. Fargo is by far the best I’ve seen from them. They take this chilling, brutal, and violent story, and they keep it chilling, brutal, and violent, but it’s also has lighthearted and absurdly hilarious undertones. Many movies attempt to achieve this, but it often feels forced. This, however, did not. It’s quite brilliant. I laughed out loud multiple times during the movie, and I was also shocked by how brutal it could be at times.
This movie hit me harder than most films ever do. It is absolutely unforgettable. The Coen’s grab us from the very start and never let us go. It’s a very investing and involving film, and you feel like you are going through this with the characters. They perfectly balance humor and intensity, and I loved every second of it. I wouldn’t say that Fargo is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while, but I would say that it’s one of the best movies that I’ve seen in my entire life.
