Welcome to the heartiest surprise of 2024. “Thelma” is a fucking blast from start to finish. I truly believe there is a chance June Squibb has a shot during awards season… at 94 years old. She is so amazing as she tries to get back $10,000 that was stolen by scammers. When I tell you laughed during this, I’m really saying I howled. There are so many moments of nonchalant activities that are way funnier than they should be given the situation. This movie isn’t just a comedy movie: it’s an action movie. And its stunts are as mundane as you can get- walking up stairs, tripping on dirt, driving a scooter. It’s all cued to an action score that never becomes corny. You truly believe the action, because you want Thelma to get her money back more than anything. And she’s an old lady who is tech deficient, so relies on her grandson to work the internet. For me, this is the funnest movie of the year- and my favorite.
