Oppenheimer
Wow. Such elegant storytelling. It’s hardly about the bomb or even the politics; it is about J. Robert Oppenheimer. And what an interesting protagonist to follow: a genius respected by everyone, envied by some, with ‘flaws’ that he owns, and with grounded internal conflict surrounding one of the most consequential times of the century.
Many moments, even down to the Trinity test, have a refreshing and authentic casualness about them that lead to a great ‘in the moment’ feeling throughout. Albert Einstein, the news of Hiroshima, Hitler dying..all things we look back on with such historical weight, but at the time it was simply what was going on. And that comes through profoundly.
Nolan, Cillian Murphy, and many others bring what I can’t describe better than elegance to this story. It’s not sensational, it’s incredibly grounded and personal. And it doesn’t end with Hiroshima/Nagasaki, because Oppenheimer’s story doesn’t end there.
Watched in 70mm IMAX with real film projection which was very cool! Want to watch again on a standard screen, but this was incredibly immersive. 3 hours but didn’t lag for a moment. Could’ve gone on for another 30-60 minutes and I think I would’ve been equally as gripped. Don’t know what more I could’ve asked from it though.
(One of) this summer’s blockbuster(s) excels, and I think could be remembered for a very long time as an iconic film.
