Backrooms
This is absolutely TEEEEEETERING on a five stars but there are a couple flaws. I think they did not need to spend all their lore explaining time in one scene, they could’ve somewhat split it up and allowed the viewer to pick up the pieces for themselves.
Also, I didn’t feel much impact for Clark after Reinsve goes on that monologue like I understand the whole “I’ll stay” stuff but I don’t think anything she’d say would make a difference to him staying so that scene was basically only for the viewers.
Everything about the movie is awesome. I see an absurd amount of people complaining about the ending but I feel that the backrooms is less of a character-driven piece and more of an experience. Think of our two main characters as lanterns to guide us through this mysterious maze so that we can get a full sense of what it is and the place it has on this world
My favorite thing about the movie is how phenomenal it sounds. I don’t really fully understand what mixing is but I think the mixing was great? It’s just so impressive to have good jumpscares that wouldn’t work as well in other horror movies. It’s just so genius to me about how the sound has a specific pattern and tone and ANYTHING that breaks the tone, whether scary or not, is so abrupt that you’ll jump and then feel embarrassed about jumping.
The acting is (as expected) phenomenal. I expected nothing less from two Oscar deserving actors.
Obviously, this movie will not even be close to getting nominated for any Oscars but it would be one of, if not, the best production design win I’d ever see.
Final shot was just absolutely phenomenal too I want a poster of that. Never dove too deep in all that random backrooms lore but the idea of EVERYTHING that’s being stored in your memory gets their own little clunky spot in the backrooms is just so hauntingly compelling.
Certainly not the best movie I’ve seen this year but one of my favorites I’ve seen in a while.
