The Odyssey
With the way this movie was hyped up over the past week and talked about over the past couple of years, you’d assume it would truly just be the greatest movie ever. Typically, these assumptions never end well for the movie. This might’ve just met those expectations. Obviously that’s hyperbole but at the same time, it might not be. I struggled to find anything about this movie that didn’t leave me in awe. A truly faithful adaptation of Homer while still having the same theme but showing different perspectives to convey the magnitude of the story. It’s not crazy to say that this movie might just have the greatest set pieces of any movie ever. Every single time Matt Damon and his soldiers arrive on a beach, I shuddered with fear and curiosity as to wonder of what horrors could possibly be. Christopher Nolan has a strong case for one of the most consistent filmographies ever made (tenet doesn’t exist for me). With the amount of strong films in Nolan’s catalogue, after first viewing, this is surely already in talks to be his magnum opus. For me, it surpasses The Dark Knight, Inception, and Interstellar. If I watch it again, I have the feeling it could surpass Oppenheimer, a film in which I found my admiration for cinema and for the work of Nolan.
Many will say that the definition of a perfect film is one that does everything it was intended to do. This feels like one of the few out there that does even more. What a ride.
