Weapons
It feels so silly to ramble on about how amazing this movie is, because everyone knows that already. I mean, it’s doing fantastic in the box office, there’s already a million reviews online, word of mouth is keeping people at the theaters seeing this. But, man. I just really loved weapons.
Every choice in this movie felt so intentional, from the score to the camera work. Hell, even the clear product placement never felt out of place. It was funny, creepy, and a damn good mystery.
Grief as a theme in horror has been overdone this past decade and even though it’s brought some great movies, none of theme ever felt fresh, but Cregger does a fantastic job of taking this overdone theme and flipping it on its head to give you a new perspective when it comes to addiction, loneliness, and modern day witch hunts when it comes to major tragedies like this.
I really don’t want to tag this as a spoiler, but the storytelling itself is so genius, how you have to spend so much time keeping up with the pacing of this movie, it leaves you with so many new questions, you completely forget about the central question of what happened to those damn kids, until finally, you’re left with probably one of the best final acts I’ve seen in a movie in years. It does a brilliant job at showing just enough to keep you curious, but not holding your hand through the entire movie. It answered the perfect amount of questions to keep conversations about this movie so fun. The open-ended conclusion leaving just enough room for debate, but keep everyone agreeing with the same general idea of what happened afterwards.
I could go on and on about how every single thing in this movie had a million meanings, about the performances, the pacing. How this was an absolute banger since the first teaser trailer dropped. Hell, let me talk about that scene of Justine and Donna in the liquor store for thirty minutes, but I don’t want to be that guy… so I’ll wrap this up, by saying when sequels and remakes have been dominating theaters these past few years, weapons was such a breath of fresh air. God, fuck yeah. This movie was awesome.
