Sinners
Hands down the best film of the year so far. I’m not a massive horror fan and to be honest I don’t think I ever will be, but when you hear Ryan Coogler is making a vampire movie starring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, you lock the fuck in. I think what makes this film so special is that it’s so much more than a horror film. If anything the horror element feels secondary to true philosophy and ideologies of this film. The themes of racial oppression and cultural identity are the backbones of this film and the fact that this film would work brilliantly without the supernatural element, speaks volumes to how beautiful this film is.
The direction by Ryan Coogler is immensely stunning, the performances are beyond special and the score by Ludwig Göransson is simply breathtaking. Shoutout Miles Caton as well, as I believe this is his on screen debut and what a performance he gives, both in his acting and musical ability. I pray to god that people come to see this movie because I feel this film has the power to grip audiences into original stories and hopefully gives studios faith that not everyone wants corporate slop all the time. I can’t imagine that this film will be outside of my top 10 by the end of the year, but who knows, upon rewatch it has every chance to go even higher!!!
