Phantom Thread
“I jump ahead in our life together, and I see a time near the end. I can predict the future, and everything is settled. And all our lovers and children and friends come back and are welcome. And we have large gatherings where everyone is laughing and playing games. I am older and I see things differently, and I finally understand you. I take care of your dresses, keeping them from dust and ghosts and time.”
Just as the story is about obsession, I am obsessed with this film. Daniel Day-Lewis is a magician, how can you play such different yet similar roles a decade apart and make it hard to choose which is better. Reynold is played so elegantly with this pompous selfish childlike behavior that just sucks you into the performance, PTA’s direction is nothing short of perfection and the cinematography makes every shot feel like a painting. The classical score’s suspense along with the long running shots create an uncertainty of what might happen especially due to the immaturity of the characters. Such a masterpiece, my favorite PTA and possibly his best, most definitely his most underrated and deserving of all the praise.
May this love never find me.
