Anora
appreciated even more on a second watch
the way sean baker shifts the momentum at about the halfway point is impressive. Anora goes from one kind of love story to another with an extended comedic interlude in between. it’s also crazy how deftly he manages to slow down and quiet the tone and pace so that that final shot hits with as much impact as it does. in the hands of a lesser director, that movement would feel jarring and out of place but baker makes you know this is how he intended the story to end all along
a lesser writer would have tried to give her a triumphant girlboss moment “i’m getting my alimony” moment. but baker is smarter than that and has crafted a realistic world with realistic characters so the story needs to go a different way
