Babylon
This is to Singin’ in the Rain as La La Land is to Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
Yeah it’s derivative and might as well be a remake/adaptation but that doesn’t take away from the value of the craft or story or talent. Still fucks. Just makes me want Chazelle to do something more original. Maybe he needs to direct someone else’s script?
Maybe the best gag ever is when Brad Pitt asks who would want sound in a film and someone rips a massive diarrhetic fart in the background
Score is fuckin stellar
The Sidney scene with the burnt cork might be the most heartbreaking thing committed to film
Samara Weaving has probably the funniest casting here ever. All the bit parts and supporting actors really steal the show but that’s not to say the stars aren’t great. I want more Diego Calva in stuff
Movies rock. Hollywood sucks.
Some weird choices with when to subtitle Calva and when not to. They subtitled ‘No entiendo ingles’ but not the climactic yelling at Robbie’s character? I wonder why that was
Sound editing was pretty bad. Some weird audio cuts, some very obvious ADR (especially for Calva) and weird dips in quality, most noticeably with Tobey Maguire’s scene (btw he produced this?)
