Barbie
SUBLIME!
Barbie becomes a tulpa
many great gags, some super interesting plot threads, but i can’t say i those threads didn’t sort of just unravel at the end. like i love the set up and the themes and the humor and the world i just feel like it didn’t quite stick the landing. i think maybe they had a ton of ideas and the script got a little crowded at the denouement so i was left a little unsatisfied. could also be that i went in with expectations that were too high
and what about allan? sequel bait?
margot robbie is great. ryan gosling is great. will ferrell is great. america ferrerra is great. in fact most of the cast is really really good.
i feel like you can almost sense where a very good script had to make compromises with a consumerist plastic toy company. it feels kinda like mattel is using this movie to relaunch barbie 2.0 for the modern world, and i can’t imagine this won’t be an insanely profitable move for them. feels like maybe they were hesitant to make ken an actual villain?
i’m still not sure how i feel about meta-modernism /meta-narratives. if you laugh at yourself too much it becomes insincere
