TÁR
Nooo I’m a Tár. I’m a TÁR!
This movie is like Ready Player One for classical music nerds (very clearly well researched, and you can tell they made sure the orchestra looked like an orchestra and the conductor looked like a conductor).
Immaculate script. A masterclass at implication and set-up/payoff. The movie clearly has a message about separating the art from the artist, and when it’s acceptable to do so and when it isn’t and I think that’s done really well.
Incredibly well paced too— never drags despite being largely conversational. You’re never quite sure what’s going to happen next, even though there are no big twists or surprises really, and I think it’s aware of that with the Bach monologue towards the beginning. It’s about the question, not the answer.
Blanchett has this Oscar on lock and it’s going to be hard to imagine anyone coming close. Also Mark Strong is really good? Why isn’t he in more/better stuff? All around, this will probably sweep
My only thought is I feel like everything I’m SE Asia feels a bit superfluous? It’s not poorly done or anything but it doesn’t feel necessary, and I didn’t catch the Monster Hunter reference so that’s on me.
