Anora
Anora's relationship with class is much less intentional and much more, just is - a thing woven into the DNA of the world playing out. The exploration of disconnect through connection is endlessly fascinating, rich context within manifestations and mortal subjectivity dictating meaning.
Ivan's impulsive sensibilities manifest from his life being one without thought. Never is the question this or that, but this first or that first. Ivan exists in an ultimately subservient role however, his master holds unconditional love and protection over him, serving his nihilistic aura. Justifiably so - how else could Ivan possibly manifest. Baker's sauce is to view all his subjects as just that - symptoms.
The contrast Ani plays in a similarly subservient role is that she is bound to a master defined by condition. As soon as the orgasm is over, Ani, in the eyes of Ivan, transforms from Goddess to mortal. Ani's manifestation as parodoxically Goddess and mortal is circumstantial in the manifestation of Mikey Madison's body - tinged with tinsel and expression, tinged with human manifestation. She is not a Goddess to Ivan if not mortal - if not hustling him.
The God to mortal transition is explored through transition into the second act; pleasure ends and pain begins; blood humourosly pours from the cast to the beat of a nihilistic chaos. Behind that chaos, beauty is hidden; by means of context, comrades are turned against us. This is the mainstreamification of Baker, what was once quite brutally funny in it's stakes - Tangerine - is now absurdly funny in it's lack thereof.
Anora ends as healing begins. It's the final rejection of nihilistic control and an embrace of meaning that leads to a recontextualization of vulnerability. Where Ivan seeks to exploit it, Igor seeks to simply love it.
Is that sincerity any less disingenuous - arising from condition and desire, moments spawned from an idiotic God who only perceived sex as male and female - this or that. Or is God mortal in his subservience to the ultimate - to circumstance and manifestation.
