The Room
Tommy wanders into film totally virgin - while ironically attempting to prove otherwise through an endless stream of performed, sex? In a way however, his pornographic reinvention of sex spawns new definitions for the virgin, not seeking to just prove Tommy can fuck, but that he is a new found sexual enigma that'll rock your world if you take him seriously enough.
You would learn less about Tommy's inner psyche as a fly on the wall watching his day to day life; he creates something so profoundly revealing of his vapid insecure soul that all we can do is applaud the man for his dedication to making his movie a million ways detatched from our expectations of "good".
What 'The Room' achieves is polarising anyone who sees it, dumbfounding them and giving them a sense of superiority over Tommy. We look down on it, "even we know this is terrible! It must be! I know audio shouldn't be out of sync like that! I know plot lines shouldn't lead nowhere! I know having that many self indulgent sex scenes is bad!"
Let's be honest though, you really can't look away. On a level, we are jealous of some part of Tommy. Hollywood ideology doesn't allow this perspective but there is a level of charm to The Room that is inescapable, one that with times has grown to its true sincere form.
A surrealist dream funded by a mysterious force, a true anomaly standing in the face of profit centered efficiency.
Lost in a world of towering scrolls, inscribed is the flaws of Tommy Wiseau and they're written in plain English. Issue is, Tommy is not from Earth, Tommy can not read English, he's an alien. His film is an imitation blockaded by himself; we hate to admit Tommy's imitation is so familiar; every ambition and lack of ability to achieve them only alien to ideology.
There with his weird alien dick, and when we're totally honest, in some way we're turned on.
