Interstellar
i would’ve stayed with dr. brand. that’s just me though. • • saw this in imax (my first imax experience in years) and my mind is still in pieces, but im so beyond happy i went. it was only showing in a couple theaters somewhat near me, for a couple days, with limited times, so the theater was of course absolutely PACKED as it should be. having all of the laughs and tears together while watching a film like this, was really special.
the first time the seats really went crazy with the wormhole sequence, absolute CHILLS. i had chills basically the whole time, i was in a perpetual chill state if you will (😎). but i really felt like i was going through that wormhole, with the warped stars flying past us. and then you talk about the miller’s planet sequence, the docking sequence, the black hole sequence, AND the tesseract sequence. ABSOLUTELY NUTS. i was always a fan of the docking sequence but holy fuck the black hole sequence was just sensual to the fullest extent of the word.
the cast?? absolutely bangin’. you got mcconaughey who is at his absolute peak, hathaway (my wife) does her thing as always, caine balls out, and damon made me hate his guts (which of course is great). and THEN there’s more. you got a young goat in the making at the time in chalamet, affleck does well as a bruised and battered elder counterpart, as well as murph who is played brilliantly by both foy and chastain. like i can go on but the cast is simply perfection and one of the best ever.
i've seen this film four times prior to tonight, and thought it was amazing every time. but i now have an even deeper appreciation for the artistry that went into this. nolan is one of the best and might be the best to ever do it when it’s all said and done. obviously he had a whole crew to help but his vision for what he wanted visually, audibly, emotionally, and thematically is mind boggling and is amplified by a million in an imax theater. i was also sitting in the second row so i really noticed maybe more than i ever have, the importance of blocking and how a director and DP are able to manipulate where your eyes move and what they want you to focus on. lots of little details like that that are so cool to experience in a new way like that.
a few of my favorite quotes just for my own future referencing: - love is not something we invented. its observable, powerful. it has to mean something. - dr. brand - we used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. now we just look down, and worry about our place in the dirt. - cooper - do not go gentle into that good night; old age should burn and rave at close of day. rage, rage against the dying of light. - prof. brand - we agreed amelia, ninety percent. - cooper - it’s not possible!! - no. its necessary. - tars/cooper - see you on the other side, slick. - cooper - what about the FLAT TIRE!!? - tom
ok i’m done. one of the best ever. will be back in my four favorites once christmas is over.
