Prisoners
Why are these 17 year old kids subdued into watching SpongeBob at the beginning😭. There is so much to unpack in Denis Villenueve’s master claw that is Prisoners. How on gods green earth did this receive only 1 Oscar nomination, that is absolutely baffling. This film has 2, maybe even 3 nomination worthy performances. Hugh Jackman should’ve pretty easily been nominated for best actor, maybe not win but at least nominated, his performance was unreal, I don’t understand how actors can put so much realistic emotion into lines like he did. Along with Jackman, Mellisa Leo also could’ve been considered for a best supporting actress nomination, she was phenomenal as the twist villain(which I predicted, not to brag or anything). And of course, there’s Mr Gyllenhaal. In my humble opinion, this should’ve been an easy Oscar win for supporting actor. I did my research before that claim, and after looking at the “highlight reel” of each nominee’s performance in the films I haven’t seen, it’s insane how Jake wasn’t nominated, you’re telling me Jonah Hill got the mention over Gyllenhaal, ridiculous. His performance in this film is some of the most riveting, scene dominating stuff in a while, I’d argue it was better than Jackman’s, not to compare the 2, as they are both phenomenal performances. Literally the only reason why this isn’t a 5 star is because I decided that instead of renting it, I watched it on Fawesome TV, so I got smacked with 4 minutes of adds every 10 minutes, which cut the tension and build up in multiple key scenes which was very frustrating. This film is absolutely phenomenal; Villeneuve is a master storyteller who will continue to be one of the best filmmakers of our generation, and expect a 5 star rewatch to come to Prisoners in the near future.
