Sinners
this was such an amazing experience, what i wouldnt give to watch this in the cinema!!!! and even if i was watching it on my shitty macbook at 720p, this experience was RIVETING.
not only is this film visually appealing, the writing, the music, and holy shit the acting, it was absolutely amazing. the dance scene where all these cultures came together for music genuinely brought a tear to my eye— it was just everything that makes me love film. not to mention the changing of aspect ratios when theres perceived danger, that changed my life. plus the ending scene of their community, their family— that gets ripped away simply for the fact that they are different.
there is definitely a deeper meaning to all this, colonization, the white mans religion being forced onto everybody simply for the fact that we are seen as “animalistic” for believing in anything else. this is just jam-packed with symbolism.
ryan coogler did such an amazing job and if any film deserves an academy award, its this one. michael b… please dont even let timothee smell that oscar— dont let that art-hating asshole win. along with the fact timothee dogged on other art forms (which is more than enough for me to dislike him), his performance in comparison to michael b’s, just wasnt as emotionally poignant or interesting. how many marty supremes do we have in film? how many smoke and stacks do we have?
my main complaint for marty supreme was how horribly every single woman was written, and while this film does suffer from “women-only-associated-with-men” syndrome (meaning every single one of them were romantic interests) they were still written objectively well and carried weight in the story! i mean annie was the entire reason anybody survived! overall, i was able to properly connect with these ladies, something that marty supreme failed in— humanizing them.
its been a while since i walked away from a film buzzing. please, please let them win those oscars.
