Fallen Angels
Took two watches to enjoy WKW’s film — but boy did it click. Firstly, let me reiterate and give my flowers to the shots in this film; arguably one of the coolest styles I’ve seen in a picture film. I feel you can’t interpret this movie as a traditional story though, but rather as a story for each character, experiencing one another.
Wong, a very nihilistic character, shows hints of finding purpose — trying to leave his current life and even start a business. However, it becomes evident that he is a depiction of nihilism himself. He knows he needs to leave, he knows he shouldn’t have accepted the final job, yet he concluded that life would forever remain meaningless and proceeds anyways. In a way I feel as if he knows he will die and proceeds because he truly does not find meaning, but alternatively I think there may be more. He might have done it so his agent will forget him. For instance, Wong accepts that his death is necessary to free the agent from her obsession with him, while at the same time the agent recognizes that the best thing she can do for him is to relieve him of the burden of life. Idk, don’t want to yap too much though, so don’t even get me started on the existentialism the agent is going through or mr. pineapples! Felt like a dialogue between nihilism and existentialism.
