Prisoners
Outstanding performances across the board. In the scenes with Paul Dano and Hugh Jackman, it was like a constant battle for who could give the better performance. Jake Gyllenhaal as the detective was amazing, and he’s slowly becoming one of my favorites after each movie.
Same with Hugh Jackman. Since all I saw with him as a little kid was the X-Men franchise and The Greatest Showman, he’s definitely a whole lot better than I ever realized.
This being the second Denis Villeneuve movie I’ve seen — the first being Blade Runner 2049 — he’s also starting to become a favorite. Like I said in the last Villeneuve review I made, I still need to check out both Dunes.
Enough about the performances and whatnot, but this whole movie was very blue — and not a rich blue, but a cool, muted blue. That added to the atmosphere and vibe a bunch, which was another thing that made me like it so much.
Another thing I love when movies do is suggestive endings. Not saying I don’t like when movies blatantly say how it ended, but it’s definitely awesome when a movie ends on a “cliffhanger.” Not an important, plot-essential cliffhanger, but one that leaves the viewers to have their personal take on the final scene.
One of my all-time favorite usages of what I just described is Christopher Nolan’s Inception. If you haven’t seen this or Inception, please do yourself a favor and check them out.
