The Gold Rush
This is definitely his best work. Out of all the Chaplin movies I’ve watched this is the only one that really clicked with me long term. I’ve only ever watched the 1925 version because I felt the need to see what the original audience saw. However, after also watching the documentary that came in the dvd I found out that Chaplin basically saw this version as garbage and that the 1942 version was the definitive one. I will definitely have to give it a watch sometime as they are basically two different movies. I really enjoyed the sets and effects in this movie as they capture the world of “The Gold Rush” in such a wonderful way. Especially with the cabin, that’s where the comedy really shines. I also really enjoy the story of the Tramp in this movie and I believe this to be one of the saddest of his movies. He literally gets played by Georgia just for her to show up when she has nothing and continue to use my poor tramp. However, apparently their relationship is completely different in the 1942 movie which I’m excited to see. I also want to talk about how GREAT the music is in this movie AND it was all compose by him. It’s actually insane how talented this man was. Since the 1925 version is a silent film the score does a lot of the story telling and he did a really splendid job in capturing his story in sound.
