Maid
ive been wanting to watch this for agesss. i wasnt sure if i was ready to watch a series titled "maid." i only ever heard praise for qualley and how this series was underrated. ik i was going to eventually watch this show. this type of story is my thing.
when ppl talk about qualley, they said her performance here proved she is magnificent of an actress. at the time, qualley was still up and coming. i always believed she was a star. she has the aura and chops for it. shes versatile visually and artistically. qualley led the entire series perfectly. its the eyes, jaw and mouth. hands down qualley's best role and will be a performance that will stick. alex's mom and sean made me sooo angry. but felt bad for them at the same time?? ive been wondering what happened to nick robinson. hes amazing in this srs role. andie and margaret actually didnt feel like they were acting as (irl) mother and daughter.
generational trauma is all i really have to say. nobody is bad by default. its the lack of support and uncontrolled trauma. it's how u get up and stay afloat tht matters.
im not sure how much ppl are familiar with vancouver. even tho the story doesnt take place in vancouver, it felt close to home from the beginning. seeing the ferry terminal. then when i saw the dv house and area outside the dv house... thts when i realized... this was filmed in my hometown. tht style of low income housing, nature and suburbs. road signs so vibrant. the rocky beach. the cherry blossoms. ive discussed this in the past that many american tv/films may not be set in vancouver, but its so obvs it was filmed here. the cities of these american media doesnt even play a huge part in the characters and stories. so with that being said, when i clearly see backdrops of my hometown, i already think "oh feels so vancouverite." i once stated and will go die on this hill that vancouver is if the coming of age genre had to be a city. but with maid, it sheds light on the issues vancouver has as well. kids with unstable parents and lack of foundation. vancouver has a huge socio economic gap between diff kids and their families. nobody here is (truly) middle class. its the most expensive city and highest poverty rate in the country. alot of ppl my age came from pretty unfortunate backgrounds. for the past yr ive been extremely grateful to be not in those unfortunate circumstances and systems. ppl already coming from fractured beginnings. scattered and chaotic. if i were in maddy's shoes, i would grow up to feel some sort of resentment and confusion. this is why they say to not bring a child to the world if ur not ready to give them a home.
this was beautifully done. its not a hard watch. its also not smt to watch for background noises either. love the wolf alice feature. the blue weekend album is so versatile. i think the ending was a little too cinematic and for the sake of making viewers happy. i heard the book is pretty infuriating and unrealistic as well.
