Fallen Angels
It wasn’t til now that I fully understood the quote “Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” Bong Joon-Ho put it better than I ever could. This and House (1977) have definitely shown me just how much is on the horizon for me and I’m so excited.
Besides all that though Fallen Angels might’ve just made into the top 4. Holy shit I can’t think of a single bad thing about this. The cinematography is just stellar and just a beauty to look at. It’s like watching a living breathing painting and you just can’t help but be captivated. The use of different camera angles and speed is honestly stellar stuff and one of the reasons why the medium is so powerful.
The writing is also spectacular as well. I didn’t know what to expect as there’s a giant (hyperbolic) language barrier in between me and the film but with the subtitles it’s clear what’s being shown. The thematic elements of young love, the feeling of abandonment, and the loss of a loved one really hit me hard. I’ve experienced that all even at my young age and I just yearn for more shit like this.
Wong Kar-Wai, you’re a fucking genius and I shall never doubt your talent again. Holy shit someone erase this from my memory so I can see this again.
