Event Horizon
Weir: "The ship brought me back. I told you she won't let me leave - she won't let anyone leave.
*Did you really think you could destroy this ship? She's defied space and time. She's been to a place you couldn't possibly imagine. And now...
it is time to go back."
*
Miller: "I know. To hell."
Weir: "You know nothing. Hell is only a word. The reality is much, much worse."
I'm not a huge science fiction fan, but now I think I might just be.
The story revolves around a small rescue team, spearheaded by Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne), who are sent to the far depths of the Solar System in 2047 to find the ship Event Horizon, which mysteriously disappeared seven years prior. The rescue crew, with the help of the designer of the missing ship, Doctor Weir (Sam Neill), locate a signal of the missing vessel and board the ship.
On board the abandoned Event Horizon, the crew begin seeing hallucinations and have visions linked to their past mistakes or troubled lives back home, hinting at the Horizon knowing a lot more than first anticipated. And when the team find the last recorded tape of the doomed original crew, all hell breaks loose.
Director Paul Anderson finds the perfect balance between psychological, atmospheric horror and complete gore (which there was going to be a lot more of, but was taken out of the final cut). I would have preferred if it stayed more psychological, but some of the more cliché, gory horror elements were needed to resolve the story near the end.
The whole concept of a ship, a physical, seemingly souless object knowing, haunting and terrifying its crew is a completely unique and absolutely genius concept. The Event Horizon was designed based on Notre Dame cathedral, with the black hole hell portal being where the altar is in the church. There are many religious conspiracy theories about this film that contribute to its lasting impact on the viewer (definitely me included) and cult following.
Overall, the sci-fi universe in this film has only been used once, and somebody needs to captalize on that because this concept has quite literally, as the tagline suggests, infinite potential. Event Horizon is an absolute jewel of the science fiction genre that needs to be given a second chance from those that first criticised it.
