The Mothman Prophecies
"Wake up number thirty-seven."
"Wake up."
Are we deadass with this three star average.
The Mothman Prophecies is a cult horror mystery film based on a local legend from the 1960s and a 1975 book of the same name staring Richard Gere (Pretty Woman) and Laura Linney (Truman Show). The film also claims to be 'based on true events'.
The film revolves around widowed reporter John Klein (Gere) who ends up in the town of Point Pleasant for seemingly mysterious reasons. While there he meets local police officer Connie Mills (Linney) who tells Klein that residents of the town have being seeing and hearing strange things, things Klein suspects are linked to his wife's death two years prior...
This film received mixed reviews and made little to no profit on release and has largely been forgotten, but did find its audience and has gained a cult following (that I now may be part of). None of the actors miss the mark here, with Richard Gere and Will Patton really shining in their roles.
Where this film is taken to the next level however is the directing. Mothman Prophecies features some of the best directing and shots I have ever seen and definitely represents the craziness and descent into madness of Klein and the locals.
Overall, The Mothman Prophecies is one of the most underrated and one of the best horror movies of the 2000s, if not of all time and I think it might just be my favourite.
