The Prophecy
“Some people lose their faith because heaven shows them too little. But how many people lose their faith because heaven showed them too much?"
Wow. That ending hits real hard.
No other film succeeds in capturing the same vibe and feeling of The Prophecy which makes it truly stand out as an incredibly unique take on angels and the bible.
Yes, all of Walken's witty one-liners still made me laugh and his monologues were really impactful. But, I noticed viewing this a second time how great the ensemble cast is as well. Eric Stoltz is incredible as Simon and portrays his character exactly as you would want. Also, Joseph Hytner as the coroner is actually really funny and makes the most out of his little screen time. In addition, Elias Koteas, who can be hit and miss, definitely hits with this one especially during his 'would you ever want to see an angel' monologue and in his opening scene. And last but most certainly not least, Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer absolutely steals the show in his brief ten minutes on screen. He portrays the devil as charismatic and suave but purely evil and almost deserves his own film (hear that Miramax).
Overall, The Prophecy is still one of my favourite films and, after watching all of them, is definitely better than its four sequels despite some of them definitely putting up a fight. This film has definitely, as I said in my first review 'carved itself into my bones'.
