The Vanishing
"You're just scared that without the search you won't know who you are. Who is Jeff Harriman, if he's not the guy looking for Diane? Can you really walk away from finally knowing the answer?"
The 1993 American remake of The Vanishing is an incredibly underrated psychological thriller/horror film that wallows in the shadow of its allegedly far superior Dutch counterpart (I haven't seen it yet, so I can't make a comparison).
Jeff Bridges' character in this movie is genuinely one of the best antagonists I've ever seen, being so unimaginably creepy and strange in a performance I don't think many other actors could have pulled off convincingly.
However, the ending of the film is absolutely terrible, with Jeff being saved by Rita and Barney being ultimately killed. The final scene involves Jeff getting his book deal and receiving a cup of coffee, jokingly saying he doesn't drink it anymore. The ending is so cheesy and tonally imbalanced with the rest of the film that it kind of ruins it in a way. The ending of the original film is meant to be much darker, and even though they got the same director for the remake, the studio just had to go and make a shambles of it and change the ending drastically.
Overall, The Vanishing is a modern masterpiece of a film that is severely overlooked by many in the genre of psychological thrillers. While the ending does sort of ruin the film, what comes before it is some of the best filmmaking I've seen.
