The Fall
"its my story"
"Mine too"
The fall is a story about a man telling a girl a story. The movie is split in two with half of it being about the life of the girl and the man and half of it being about the story the man makes up.
The life, the emotion crux of the movie. The man is an actor, injured and unable to walk due to an accident. The girl family is ill, she is stuck at the hospital and bored she starts talking to the man.
The life of the two is emotional, with the man asking the girl for favours, ones that increasingly feel like favours that shouldn't be asked of the girl. She does them so the story continues. Like the girl the audience wants to go back to the stunning and vibrant world of the story. Like the girl the audience is willing to watch/do these tasks. Like the girl the audience becomes more attached to the life instead of the story.
The fall is a story of the man and girl and as the relationship becomes stronger, so does the story and the lifes relationship. When the characters lives get sad so does the story, when they get angry the story becomes brutal. The story has to have the girl and the man, due to the man's bitterness the story would be darker, with him making choices not fit for the beautiful world, choices the girl changes to make the story more gorgeous.
The story is stylish. Where movies are interested in having the characters fit into the world but stand out to the audience, the fall cares little of the fitting in. The characters colours are bright and have little shade, much like a drawing made by a child with a small collection of pencils.
The story is the most visual diffierent movie I've seen, it does not keep to the laws of reality, it does not care for it's potholes, the girl does not care. It's a dream, and the fall doesn't fall to act like one. The visuals are mystical, magical and arcane, with it being unable to leave you un stunned.
The falls actors are incredible. Lee Pace is incredible, the scene where he is by the bed is heartbreaking. Catinca Untaru is a child actor who made me forget she was acting, an accomplishment that speaks volumes to her ability.
The fall is a movie I find myself thinking about often, despite me knowing the surprises the second rewatch did nothing but help my love. There is a small chance one of my friends will read this, a smaller chance they will watch the fall because of it. But I had to write this, I had to say something about this movie, it urged me too.
