The Devil
Had to start off the year right
This is a piece of cinema that I will be coming back to again and again, year after year.
There’s a lot to be said about every aspect of this magnificent film. Every element, every line of dialogue, and every symbol is so beautifully crafted and impactful in its own right.
What most stood out to me this time was the sure amount of passion and pain that exudes from this. Żuławski’s disconnect, anger, and pain, especially towards the country he is so connected to, is apparent throughout.
It’s such a personal film, that seems to me that you either do get it or just don’t. Many won’t and haven’t liked it for this very reason, at least in my opinion.
This film is a lot to process and digest, but the next time I watch it, I’m absolutely taking notes.

Żuławski’s script for Possession is coming out later this month. I hope by some miracle that one day the script for this masterpiece is found, translated, and released.
