Dune
“The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. A process that cannot be understood by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it.”
I’m too lazy to write a review so here’s my good friend @samuel’s review (whom’s thoughts are aligned with mine’s):
a colossal sci-fi epic, and ultimately, a marvelous achievement in modern cinema. Denis Villeneuve has proven himself time and time again to be one of the greatest filmmakers of our current generation, and dune is a shining example as to why he is such a master of his craft.
a film so grand in its scale, rivaling the likes of star wars and the lord of the rings in terms of its world-building. through every single scene, you as a viewer are constantly learning more and more about the world that you’ve been introduced to, while it simultaneously gives you enough breathing room to focus on every essential element of its story. with the amount of exposition being thrown your way, it never feels like it’s too much to handle.
Villeneuve has made other great sci-fi films in the past, but this is far and away his best one yet. narratively speaking, it is fantastic, and technically speaking, it is one of the most sublime pieces of art that he’s ever made. the visuals are breathtakingly beautiful, along with some of the best set pieces, sound design, and even one of the best scores of the past decade. it’s a rare occasion for me to come across a film so well-constructed, and i’m already wishing that i could experience this film for the first time again.
quite frankly, i’ve been avoiding this for the longest time due to the fact that i felt very skeptical about it, but now i realize how idiotic and brain dead that sounds. dune is an extraordinary film that stands out above many others, and words can’t express how much more excited i am for its sequel. catch me in theaters on opening night, because i will most certainly not be missing out on another genius display of filmmaking from Villeneuve.
