Matilda
A tiny genius gets telekinesis and decides the adults around her need to start behaving. 📚🪄
Matilda is so fucking good at making childhood feel both magical and genuinely unfair. Matilda's family doesn't understand her, Trunchbull actively terrorizes children, and Miss Honey is quietly carrying her own mountain of trauma—and somehow the movie manages to make all of that funny without pretending the cruelty isn't real. Mara Wilson is ridiculously lovable without overplaying Matilda, Embeth Davidtz brings warmth without turning Miss Honey into a saint, and Pam Ferris gives Trunchbull the kind of performance that permanently rewires your definition of “scary gym teacher.”
The movie absolutely has its messy bits—the tonal shifts are INSANE, some jokes are very much of their era, and the plot basically runs on Dahl logic rather than anything resembling realism. 💀 But that's exactly why I don't want this polished into something more “normal.” It's supposed to be bizarre. A child prodigy, murderous-looking school principal, telekinetic furniture, chocolate-cake punishment, crooked car dealers, and a teacher who gets her happy ending all existing in the same 98-minute movie should NOT work this well. Yet here we are. Cinema understood the assignment, threw the assignment at Trunchbull, and then ate cake. 🍰
