Pride
Pride said “what if gay activists and Welsh miners became besties while Thatcher was busy ruining everybody's fucking week?” and somehow turned that into a genuinely moving comedy.
The culture clash is hilarious because the movie lets both sides be awkward about each other instead of handing everybody a halo. Then the jokes slowly become friendship, and the friendship becomes solidarity. That's where the film really gets you.
The cast is fucking stacked—Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, George MacKay—and nobody feels like they're merely waiting for their inspirational speech. The film can be a little emotionally engineered, sure, but its sincerity is so committed that resisting it starts feeling embarrassing. It came for Thatcherism and left me emotionally mugged in a village hall. 😭🌈
