Scream
Ghostface calling teenagers to discuss horror-movie rules is still one of cinema's funniest ways to say “your evening is about to become REALLY fucking inconvenient.” 📞
Scream has that rare balance where the meta humor actually makes the slasher sharper instead of turning it into a parody of itself. Neve Campbell is fantastic as Sidney, Gale is an absolute menace, Dewey is somehow adorable, and Lillard/Ulrich bring exactly the kind of chaotic energy this mystery needs. The opening is legendary for a reason, but I especially love how the movie makes its characters' genre knowledge part of the actual survival game rather than just having them wink at the audience every five seconds.
It does sag a little in the middle, and some of the supporting characters are basically walking red herrings with homework, but the chemistry, pacing, kills, humor, and final stretch more than compensate. It's clever without smelling its own fucking farts, which is harder than it sounds. A genuinely great slasher that knows exactly how ridiculous its genre can be while still respecting why people love it. 🩸🔪
