Scream Queens
Scream Queens is what happens when Ryan Murphy looks at a slasher movie, a sorority, a fashion magazine, and a Tumblr dashboard and says “yes, put ALL of it in the blender.” 💅🔪🎀
And honestly, Season 1 has fucking sauce. Emma Roberts as Chanel Oberlin is basically a walking Chanel perfume bottle filled with venom, Keke Palmer is effortlessly magnetic, Billie Lourd is doing microscopic facial expressions that deserve their own Emmy, and Jamie Lee Curtis knows exactly how ridiculous the whole thing is. The show isn't really interested in being scary so much as being loudly, deliberately fucking ridiculous, and when that balance works, it's hilarious. The cast chemistry and quotable dialogue are doing Olympic-level heavy lifting.
BUT THEN SEASON 2 WALKED IN LIKE “what if we put the same bitchiness in a hospital?” 😭🏥 The setting change isn't inherently bad, but the first season's sorority satire had a much stronger identity; the hospital season feels more like the writers desperately trying to keep the party going after everyone already left. The mystery also isn't always as compelling as the show thinks it is, and underneath all the couture, insults, murders, and screaming, the characterization can get surprisingly thin. It's a glorious little mess: wildly entertaining, visually obnoxious, occasionally clever, occasionally dumb as shit, and absolutely not as consistently sharp as its best episodes suggest. 💋🩸✨
