Shrek 2
The Shrek sequel walked into the franchise wearing a crown, a leather catsuit, and Antonio Banderas' voice coming out of a tiny orange cat and somehow became even better than the first. 🐈⬛👑💅
What makes this one hit is how much sharper the character stuff is. Shrek isn't just fighting another villain; he's confronting the terrifying realization that Fiona's parents may never accept the person she chose. Fiona gets to be furious, vulnerable, and active in the conflict, while Julie Andrews' Queen Lillian brings an unexpected tenderness to the royal-family mess. Meanwhile, Puss enters the picture and immediately steals every scene he can physically fit his tiny boots into. The man had one sword, one hat, and an industrial-strength supply of charisma. 🥹⚔️
And the satire is firing. Far Far Away turns fairy-tale royalty into celebrity culture, Fairy Godmother is basically running a magical PR machine, and Prince Charming is a hilariously entitled nepo baby who has spent his entire life assuming the ending belongs to him. Then the finale throws “Holding Out for a Hero” over one of the most gloriously ridiculous animated action sequences of the era. 🎤✨
It's funny without constantly begging you to laugh, surprisingly emotional without getting syrupy, and packed with jokes that work for kids and adults. This is one of those rare sequels that doesn't just continue the original—it understands exactly why the original worked and goes feral with it.
