children can be exceptionally cruel. school is sometimes an escape for kids with bad home lives, but for others it is just more abuse and loneliness. and more often than not, adults are useless. they don't care or "that's life/they'll figure it out themselves". it shouldn't have to be.
kids can also be exceptionally kind. they are molded by their life experiences and by the things they are taught at home. they don't quite understand their place in the world or how they affect others. kids' rules don't make sense. their games can be dangerous. they don't know any better, they model what they see. and what is left to their imagination, they will test out. their bullying is either nonsensical or something taught to them. or a mix of both.
they may be able to "figure it out themselves", but they don't have a basis for how. there's no reference unless we give them one. and, a lot of times, they don't help because they don't have power. it can get worse if they intervene. they need someone with authority and experience to help. otherwise, it just leaves these poor babies feeling helpless and just enduring everything for the sake of it. they don't tell anyone because they think there is no help. and this shit changes kids. it traumatizes them. it makes them lash out. they don't understand these emotions and don't know what to do with them.
very hard watch, very sad. there are some sweeter moments but they are few and far between. i think it's also worse bc it's siblings. she is watching her older brother who she loves and looks up to being beat up and feels she can't do anything about it. i actually witnessed this with my younger sister. she didn't get physically beat up, but it was still heartwrenching to see it happen. i was in high school, so i can't imagine how it must feel when you're so little.
the kids do an excellent job. they give a really raw portrayal of bullying at their ages. i also cried my first several days of elementary school so nora was real as hell for being scared, even if it turned out okay. i'm sure the bully kids are fine irl but they did excellent jobs at being little brats.
