Rewatched a couple episodes- ugh. Had to take off a half star. SLB is just not the filmmaker he thinks he is. Not that there’s not a lot to like here, but it’s just embarrassing that this is all he can achieve this far into his career. Often can’t direct his actors in a way where they don’t come across as cold, inhuman mannequins. Hasn’t thought of a new way to stage a dance number in like 10 years. No mastery of story structure or pacing. I’ve been srsly exhausted with the myth of male genius in filmmaking lately, and he rly embodies it. Yes his opulent visual aesthetic is stunning and extremely pleasurable, but if he’s not a truly competent filmmaker at this point, he probably never will be.
