The Lighthouse is Eggers’ most radically creative project yet, through the examination and effects of destitute solitude and a plunge into madness. Masterclass of acting from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, and particularly a welcome return to Dafoe’s theater roots. Eggers' black-and-white 1.19:1 presentation strikes you more as a film from a seasoned Kurosawa or Kubrick, rather than this being a second directorial film. He's steadily becoming one of the my favorite filmmakers; I love the overarching sense of commitment to the historical accuracy that he strives to achieve, the blend between human and folklorish elements, and the way that he lets actors have their moments. Previously a 4.5, but five years later it's a perfect score from me. Couldn’t be more excited for Nosferatu this winter.
