Dexter
Oooh now this is a vibe. I saw this recommended on TikTok and the aesthetics looked awesome. A lot of people seem to appreciate the "Dark Fantasy" aesthetic, but it doesn't seem like a lot of films have actually been made in that style. This one is appropriately creepy and beautiful.
The organ music helps paint a great creepy vibe, and the cinematography highlights a world of dark magic, much like Labyrinth. There are bubbling dirty hot springs, candelabras, fires emerging out of nowhere to set men on fire, and a general darkness to the visuals.
Sometimes the darkness didn't look great to me though, like when characters had no separation from their backgrounds so they would blend into the walls behind them. There also was some shot selections that didn't provide enough context about what exactly we were watching, even if the majority was able to be followed. I also did keep wondering why her Dad didn't try to come rescue her? He knows where Beast's castle is, and she ran off so quickly it's not like they agreed together she was going to go. I think we needed a beat either for him to accept her standing in for him, or him deciding to go after her.
Beauty and the Beast has always had a central problem around the Stockholm Syndrome central romance. But making the story more of a horror vibe helps counteract that somewhat. I still don't think this version does enough to really show why the heck Julie would fall in love with this monster, but it's a better foot forward for me than the 1946 version I just watched.
