While The Ice Tower is certainly my favorite film of the year, I can't in good faith recommend it to many. Glacial, immersive, and sustained in perpetual ambiguity--the bitter malaise of Lucile Hadžihalilović's slow-paced psychological drama is an emotional tone poem derivative of emotions I've either never felt before or have repressed deep in my psyche. This pseudo-coming-of-age story mythologizes the unknown as an unattainable. Like a tapestry sewn in snow, ephemeral, never quite tactile. This work of art is mysterious, dangerous, and nevertheless lovely in presentation, gradually unveiling its true coldness before you can catch a warm breath. Like if David Lynch directed Disney's Frozen.
