Kisapmata
While it’s still a terrifying movie that deserves the acclaim, I think the play is overall better.
Though Mike de Leon’s direction is sublime, the editing even more so, and the performances amazing. Vic Silayan is just glorious.
A specific scene that stood out to me in this rewatch is Noel’s crashout over Mila’s lack of autonomy, and when immediately faced by Tatang, he cowers and follows Tatang’s order to sit down. I really like how Jay Ilagan acted the transition from being defiant to being a mere follower; it was so scary because it is so real. That happens.
The play saw mom Dely as the lead actress, which was such an interesting contrast from her supporting nature in this one. I had newfound appreciation for Charito Solis and her portrayal of Dely.
I also like the commentary Mike de Leon throws about cops. It still resonates.
This is a masterful movie with an even better stage adaptation. My god, Kisapmata is such a rich work of art.
