Soul
2020 had so many happen, many unimaginable things. And so, it called for us to reflect at ourselves during the last month of 2020. I’m not the same person I was in January 2020, and I’m sure many felt the same. So this, Soul, came as a Christmas Day treat. I watched it on Christmas Day, and I cried. Really cried at the end of the second act, and then really, really cried at the third act. This was an unexpected necessity for my year-end meditation. So I watched it again on New Year’s Eve, just five minutes before 2020 ended. And oh boy, was that just perfect.
This masterful film made me grateful and lucky to be alive, it couldn’t have come at a better time. December 25 was the best release date for this masterpiece, so I’m kinda glad it got pushed back from June 2020, at the expense of the Soul theater experience. This made me sit down, and really think about myself. Today’s third viewing had Soul jump instantly and high to sixth place in my top 12 favorites, and Back to the Future’s nowhere to be spotted there. Soul and Coco are both Pixar’s number one for me, apples and oranges! I heavily cried at both though, but for different reasons.
Time will be very kind to this one, has a shot at a Best Picture nomination too. And that scene where Joe plays the piano as he reminisces about the small things in life? Goddamn, that was just perfect.
