Perfect Blue
“I’m really sorry.” “Oh no it’s alright”
one of the most unique movies i’ve ever experienced. the PERFECT example of a psychological thriller. a disturbing realistic portrayal of the patriarchy that ends in a way you can not predict at all…
i imagine watching it for the second time helps you process the purpose of this movie easier, but i’m not putting myself through that again…
for a movie in 1997 you would be hopeful enough that things will change in 2026, but unfortunately things are still the same. this film highlights how much power men have in media. from producers, directors, photographers, actors, and even as an audience… each play a crucial role over women’s success as we see with the fictional character mima and her manager rumi.
mima is put in a position where in order for her to successfully transition from her previous career into her dream one she has to do something extremely disgusting… i won’t lie i came in knowing it was going to be heavy, but i didn’t expect to lower the audio.. there’s a really hard watch in here for the purpose to show that these dreams she wants are made like this because men set the stage. in a course i took last winter in U.S history through the lens of civil rights activists, elizabeth cady stanton says it best that our religion, laws, and customs, are all founded on the belief that woman was made for man. with this in mind we can understand how this is normalized in society, and why mima does what she does, and why rumi reacted that way
everyone in the filming sets knows what they are doing is wrong and sick. that’s why i think that quote i put in the beginning hits so hard with me, since no one decides to step foot or put a stop to what’s going on. we can apologize all we want, but it means nothing if your not trying to pursue change. what they are doing is not to spreading awareness, instead it fills these sick fantasies that men see as profit… we see the clear damage it does to mima, and even the audience
the audience who once saw their sweet innocent idol participate in such a disturbing film, leads to them feeling betrayed and blaming her instead of the people who put her through it… she is now despised and dehumanized by so many to where she questions her decisions of going back to her previous career. no one is on her side, and she’s anxious about her previous dans now.. and as sad it sounds she ends up achieving her goals but had to suffer through so much
there’s one obvious elephant in the room that im not addressing but for your sake the day you watch it, you can be surprised yourself… and it feels rude to refer to it as a elephant because it just speaks further of these set expectations and holding onto something that isn’t yours anymore. other than the message… as an older animated film, it aged really well. i miss this art style, and the transitions from one moment to another is both mind blowing and beautiful. the repeated sound track after every moment where we are in a state of confusion, or fear settles in so well and makes it clear that this is without a doubt of horror movie.
be prepared to say what the fuck did i just watch at the end, and it’s important for you to think while the banger end credit song plays❤️🩹
she is without a doubt the real one
